Stephanie Hangartner was born on September 27, 1989. She trained at Carter's Gymnastics Academy until February of 2005. She then moved to Desert Devils. Stephanie graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2003, Stephanie competed level nine. She won bars at the Shamrock Invitational. She also won bars at the State Championships. At Regionals, Stephanie finished fourth all-around. She won bars at Westerns. She placed seventh in the all-around. Stephanie moved up to level ten in 2004. She finished fifth all-around at the Winter Classic. She won bars at the California Classic. In 2005, Stephanie finished first on both beam and the all-around at the Surf City Classic. She placed third all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished 12th all-around.

Stephanie continued competing level ten in 2006. She won bars at the Flips USA Invitational. She placed second all-around at the Winter Classic. Stephanie won vault, beam, floor and the all-around titles at the State Championships. She placed fifth all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2007, Stephanie won vault at the Crystal Cup. She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. Stephanie finished second all-around at the Winter Classic. She did not compete all-around at the State Championships. She finished 11th all-around at Regionals. In 2008, Stephanie won floor at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the State Championships. She placed second all-around at Regionals. She finished seventh all-around at JO Nationals. Stephanie placed third on bars and ninth on floor.

As a freshman at ASU, Stephanie competed on floor at every meet. She also competed on vault in the middle of the season. She competed throughout the season on bars. In 2010, Stephanie competed in the all-around four times.
