Corey Elizabeth Hartung was born in Irwin, Pennsylvania on September 9, 1986. She is the daughter of Jeff and Karen. She has one older brother, Justin, and an older sister, Ashley. Corey trained at Kasamon Gymnastics till 2000. She then switched to Hill's Gymnastics. She lived away from her friends and family in Maryland.
Her first year as an elite was in 2000. She competed at the American and US Classic but did not make the US National Championships. Under a new gym in 2001 she placed 29th at the US Classic missing the US National Championships by 5 spots. Corey moved up to the senior international elite level in 2002. She started her season by placing 3rd all-around at the Maryland Classic. She then finished 13th all-around at the Podium Meet. At the US Classic she finished 12th and qualified to her first national championships. At nationals she placed 14th, just missing a spot on the national team. Corey started her 2003 season off by winning the Maryland Classic and Gliders Invite. Corey placed 16th all-around at the American Classic and 15th at the US Classic to qualify for her second US National Championships. At nationals she placed 18th and made the national team!
In early 2004, Corey placed third all-around at a dual meet against Japan. She placed eleventh all-around at the Podium Meet and tenth at the American Classic. Corey struggled at nationals. For her last year of club gymnastics she dropped down to level 10. She did very well at JO Nationals by placing fifth all-around. In the fall, she went to the University of Florida. During her freshman season, she was a three-time All-American on beam, floor and in the all-around. She was a member of the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and NACGC All-American Scholastic Team.
Corey earned three All-American honors as a sophomore in the all-around, beam and floor. She finished third on beam and fourth on floor in event finals. She won beam and floor at the NCAA Regional Championships earning her second consecutive regional floor title. She was an All-SEC second-team member. She won bars against Alabama. She won three floor titles. She made her all-around debut against LSU. Corey was also a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
During her junior season, she won All-American honors in the all-around, beam and floor. She won 21 event titles in 2008 including six on beam, five in the all-around and floor. SHe won the SEC beam title. She was an All-SEC team member for the third year in a row. She won at least one event in ten of Florida's meet. She was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll again.
She earned her tenth career All-American honor on floor. She plcaed third in event finals. She won beam and floor at NCAA Regionals. She earned her fourth consecutive All-SEC honor. She placed second on bars at the SEC Championships. She won ten event titles throughout the season. Corey also made her third SEC Academic Honor Roll.
