Katie Hicks was born in Clovis, New Mexico on March 10, 1987. She is the daughter of Rhonda and David Hicks. She graduated from Prescott High School. During her club career, she competed for Heather Davis and Steve Waples at North Sky Gymnastics.

Katie won the Arizona State Titles as a level eight and level nine on vault. She also won level nine floor state title. At Regionals, Katie won the level nine floor title. She won Arizona's level nine gymnast of the year. As a freshman at Southern Utah University, Katie competed the entire year on vault. She competed on floor in ten meets and on beam in three meets. She was a NACGC Academic All-American. In 2007, she competed on beam in all but two meets and vault in all but four meets. She competed on floor seven times. She was WAC Specialist of the Week. She also was on the academic all-WAC team. In 2008, she competed on beam and floor in every meet. She competed on vault in all but three meets. Katie competed on bars and the all-around at the first meet. She was on her second Academic all-WAC team. She was also an NACGC-W scholar athlete and WAC Specialist of the Week in February.
