Heather Huffaker was born in Dallas, Texas on July 11, 1985. She is the daughter of Robert and Judy Huffaker. She has one brother, Jason. She began gymnastics in 1992. She competed for Trevino's Gymnastics in Lancaster, Texas during her club career.
Heather was a three-time JO National Team Member. In 2000, she won State and Regional vault and all-around titles. She placed fourth at Nationals. She repeated these feats in 2002. In 2003, she won vault at JO Nationals. She placed third in the all-around. She also won state titles on vault for the third time. She won the Regional floor title.
In the fall of 2003, she began attending the University of Denver. She had a fine freshman campaign. She had her score counted in 48 out of 51 routines. She competed in the all-around at 12 of the 13 meets. She scored a perfect ten on vault. At the Regional Championships, she qualified for the NCAA Nationals. She competed all-around. In her sophomore season, she competed in the all-around at 12 or the 13 meets. She qualified to the NCAA Nationals again. She was the first Denver gymnast to qualify to NCAA Nationals in back-to-back seasons. In 2006, she competed in the all-around at every meet but one again. She continued to compete in the all-around as a senior. She won vault, beam, floor and the all-around against Illinois.
