Janell Campbell was born on November 23, 1990. She trained at LaFleur Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2009.

In 2003, Janell won the all-around title at the Level 10 State Championships. She finished seventh all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2005, Janell won the all-around title at the State Championships. She won vault and bars at Regionals. She placed third all-around. She finished in the top ten on bars and floor at JO Nationals. In 2006, Janell won floor at the GymQuarters Invitational. She won floor at Regionals. She finished second all-around. She competed at JO Nationals.

Janell won the all-around title at the 2007 State Championships. She finished first on bars, beam, floor and the all-around at Regionals. She did not compete at JO Nationals. In 2008, she won bars and floor at the Harley Davidson meet. She finished first all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won vault and bars. She finished second all-around. Janell had a strong competition at JO Nationals. In 2009, Janell won bars, her only event, at the State Championships. She placed first on bars and third all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals.

As a freshman at Minnesota, Janell saw action on all four events. She competed on floor in 13 of the 14 meets. She vaulted in seven meets and competed on bars in eight meets. In 2011, Janell competed on bars and floor in every meet. She also competed on vault and beam. She won floor at Michigan State. Janell won bars at Cal State Fullerton.
