Jacquelyn Ilene Johnson was born in Southfield, Michigan at Providence Hospital on June 17, 1989. She began gymnastics at the age of two at Michigan Academy of Gymnastics. Her mom, Angie, is a former a gymnast, coach and judge. Her dad's name is Chuck. She has a brother named Marshall. At the age of five, she was on the pre-team. She moved to Maple City Gymnastics where she competed level four to eight. Her next gymnastics center was Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy.
In 2001, Jacquelyn finished eighth on floor at the Eastern Championships as a level nine. She moved up to level ten in 2002. She won beam at States. She could not compete at Regionals because of an elbow surgery. In 2003, she was injured most of the year. She finished third on floor and first on beam at the State Championships. In October, she went to El Salvador for the Copa Flor De Izot Internationale. She won beam. In 2004, Jacquelyn won floor at States. She finished second all-around. At the JO National Championships, she finished second all-around. She was also second on bars. After JO Nationals, she qualified to junior international elite. Jacquelyn barely missed make the US Nationals at Classic. She went to Colorado Springs for the JO National Team Training Camp. Jacquelyn also had her third elbow surgery in 2004. In November, she went to China with the Region 5 All Star Team.
Her first year as a senior international elite was in 2005. Mary Lee Tracy sent a tape to the national Team Staff to get Jacquelyn a spot at the National Team Training Camp. She qualified to the US National Championships at the camp. At the end of July, she competed at the US Classic. Jacquelyn placed 14th all-around. At Nationals, she finished tenth all-around. She qualified for the US National Team! In early 2006, Jacquelyn went to the International Tri Meet. She finished second all-around. Surprisingly, she was selected for the Tyson American Cup. Jacquelyn placed third all-around in the preliminary competition. After a few months off, she made her second US National Team. Jacquelyn was the World Team Alternate. She signed with the University of Utah.
As a freshman, she missed most of the season with a broken foot. She exhibitioned on beam. She made the Athletics Director's Honor Roll.
