Kelsey Joannides was born on October 18, 1990. She trained at Frederick Gymnastics in Maryland during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2008.

In 2001, Kelsey competed level seven. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She moved up to level eight in 2002. She won bars and floor at the State Championships. She placed third all-around. At Regionals, she finished tenth all-around. Kelsey competed at the US Challenge as a tops national elite. She moved up to level nine in 2003. She won bars and floor at the State Championships. At Easterns, she placed fifth on bars. She finished 23rd all-around. Kelsey also competed at the National Podium Meet under elite scoring.

Kelsey began competing level ten in 2004. She was injured during her floor routine at the State Championships. In 2006, she won vault and bars at the Pikes Peak Cup. She placed second on floor at the State Championships. She placed eleventh all-around at Regionals. Kelsey won vault and the all-around at the 2007 State Championships. She was the alternate for JO Nationals. In 2008, Kelsey won bars and floor at the State Championships. She placed second all-around.

As a freshman at Illinois, Kelsey won the Big Ten Vault Title with the second-best score in Illinois school history. She was named second-team All-Big Ten. Also at the Big Ten Championships, she totaled the fourth-best all-around score in school history. She placed second on beam. At the West Regional, Kelsey finished sixth all-around. She won the beam title in each of her first three collegiate meets. Kelsey competed in the all-around at every meet, winning the IGI Chicago Style. In addition to these titles, she also won a floor title. Kelsey was an Academic All-Big Ten selection. During her sophomore year, she competed in all fourteen meets including in the all-around twice. She won beam against Ohio State. For the second year in a row, she hit a perfect 14-of-14 floor routines. Kelsey was an Academic All-Big Ten and Scholastic All-American selection.
