Amanda Johanson was born on June 7, 1989. She is the daughter of Orin and Anges Johanson. She has two older brothers, Chad and Jason. She trained at Missy Marlowe's Gymnastics until 2003. She then moved to GTC of Utah. In 2006, Amanda began competing for Olympus. She trained there until the end of her club career.
In 2002, Amanda competed as a level eight. She qualified for Regionals. She moved up to level nine in 2003. She competed at Regionals again. In 2004, she finished second on vault and sixth all-around at Regionals. She qualified for the Western Championships. She moved up to level ten in 2005. Amanda finished third all-around at the Crystal Cup and fourth all-around at the Mardi Gras Invite. She won a bronze medal on floor at Regionals.
She continued competing as a level ten in 2006. She finished fourth all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge and Long Beach Open. Amanda ended her season at Regionals. In 2007, she won the Hard Rock Invitational. She won the State vault, bars, and all-around titles. At Regionals, she won bars and finished third all-around. Amanda placed in the top twenty-five at JO Nationals.
During her freshman year at Denver, she competed in all thirteen meets with performances on vault, bars and floor. She had the third-best average on floor. She competed on vault twice. She competed on bars once and exhibitioned six times. She helped the Pioneers advance to NCAA Nationals at Regionals. During her sophomore season, she competed in floor all thirteen meets. She vaulted six times and competed on bars ten times. She had four event titles, three on floor and one on bars. She won her first event title on floor at the Cancun Classic.
