Kelsey Black was born on February 28, 1993. She trained at Athletics Unlimited through the 2004 season. She then moved to Oroville Gymnastics. Kelsey graduated from high school a semester early in January of 2011.
In 2003, Kelsey competed level seven. She placed in the top ten at the State Championships. Kelsey moved up to level eight in 2004. She won the all-around title at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. She finished fifth all-around at the State Championships. Kelsey also finished fifth all-around at Regionals. She moved up to level nine in 2005. Kelsey finished second all-around at the State Championships. She won floor. Kelsey finished 15th all-around at Regionals. In 2006, Kelsey won bars and the all-around at the Flips USA Invitational. She placed first all-around at the Golden State Classic. Kelsey finished third all-around at the AOGC Invitational. She placed second all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. At the State Championships, she won bars, floor and the all-around. Kelsey finished sixth all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed third on bars, first on floor and seventh all-around!
Kelsey began competing level ten in 2007. She finished second all-around at the Flips USA Invitational. She won vault at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. In 2008, Kelsey won vault, bars and floor at the Winter Blast. She finished second all-around at the San Diego Classic. At the Novato Classic, she placed second all-around. Kelsey won the all-around title at the Roseville Invitational in 2009. She also won the all-around title at the Snowflake Invitational. She finished second all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge and third all-around at the Byers Invitational. At the State Championships, she placed second on beam and floor. Kelsey finished third all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she placed fifth on bars. In 2010, Kelsey won all five gold medals at the Snowflake Invitational. She finished first on vault and floor at the Golden State Classic.
As a freshman at Boise State, Kelsey competed on vault, bars and floor throughout the season. She won floor at Sacramento State.
