Kaitlynn Bormann was born in South Korea on November 29, 1988. Her sisters, Danielle and Alexandria, both participated in gymnastics. Kaitlynn trained at Phoenix Gymnastics in New York. She moved to Parkettes after the 2004 season.

In 2000, Kaitlynn competed level nine. She finished 20th all-around at Regionals. She moved up to level ten in 2001. She competed at Regionals. In 2002, she finished seventh all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. Kaitlynn finished eleventh all-around at Regionals in 2003. She finished twelfth all-around at Regionals in 2004. In 2005, Kaitlynn placed second all-around at the State Championships. She won beam and the all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she placed sixth on vault and second on beam. She finished 19th all-around. Kaitlynn competed at a few invitationals in 2006.

As a freshman at Arizona State in 2007, Kaitlynn competed on vault, bars, and beam throughout the season. In 2008, Kaitlynn competed on beam in every meet. She won beam at the UNO's Flip for the Cure meet. Kaitlynn competed on bars in the second half of the season. Kaitlynn competed on bars in every meet and beam in nearly every meet in 2009. During her senior season in 2010, Kaitlynn competed on vault, bars and beam in almost every competition.
