Kaila Kilwein was born on June 22, 1992. She began gymnastics at the age of four at Flathead Gymnastics Academy in Montana. She moved to Gymnastics Express in Washington at the age of six. She began training at Puget Sound Gymnastics following the 2007 season. She followed her coach to Roach Gymnastics for the 2010 season. Kaila graduated from high school in 2010.

In 2002, Kaila competed level five. She won bars, beam and the all-around at the Mystery Classic. She steadily moved through the levels, reaching level eight in 2005. She finished in the top ten at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed fifth on vault. In 2006, Kaila finished fourth on bars at the AOGC Invitational. She placed third on bars and fourth all-around at Regionals. She moved up to level nine in 2007. Kaila finished third all-around at the California Classic. She placed sixth all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished second on bars. Kaila finished 17th all-around at Westerns.

Kaila continued competing level nine in 2008. She finished in the top ten at the State Championships. She placed second on vault at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed fifth on beam and 16th all-around. Kaila moved up to level ten in 2009. She finished sixth all-around at the State Championships. She placed second on vault at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2010, she finished second all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. She finished sixth all-around at the State Championships and fourth all-around at Regionals. Kaila finished 21st all-around at JO Nationals.

As a freshman at Sac State in 2011, Kaila competed on bars and floor throughout the season. She had one performance on vault.
