Nellie Lynn Kippley was born on June 13, 1985. She is the daughter of Dan and Marge Kippley. Her siblings are Brett, Molly, Aimee, Tammy, Maggie, Scott. She grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. During her club career, Nellie trained at Twin City Twisters.
In 2002, she competed as a level ten. She placed second all-around at Regionals. At the JO National Championships, she finished tenth on floor. Nellie placed second all-around at Regionals again in 2003. She followed that up by placing twelfth at the JO National Championships. Nellie swept the gold medals at the 2004 Minnesota State Championships. She then won the all-around, bars and floor titles at Regionals. At the JO National Championships, she finished third all-around.
Nellie began attending the University of Michigan in the fall of 2004. Her best event was floor in her freshman year. She also competed on bars and beam. As a sophomore she was an All-Big Ten second team honoree. She won the U-M Coaches Award. Nellie competed on beam and bars throughout the season. She also made some floor appearances. During her junior season, Nellie competed in the all-around for the first time. She continued competing in the all-around throughout the season. She was an NCAA All-American second-team on vault. As a senior, she was on the Academic All-Big Ten Team. She competed on floor and vault throughout the season. She won floor against Georgia. She also won floor against Michigan State.
