Makenzie Kitchens was born on February 12, 1996. She has one sister, Kamaryn, who is also a gymnast. Makenzie trains at Gymnastics Academy of Atlanta under Irina Podgornaya and Jacobo Giron.
In 2004, Makenzie competed level six. She qualified for the State Championships. She steadily moved through the levels reaching eight in 2007. She won vault at the WOGA Classic. At the Charleston Cup, she placed second on vault and in the all-around. Makenzie finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. She won a silver medal on vault. In the fall, she made the National TOPs "B" Team.
She competed level nine in 2008. Makenzie finished third all-around and second on vault at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She also placed second on vault at the IGI Chicago Style. Makenzie won the all-around at the Gasparilla Classic. At the National Gymnastics Challenge, she finished second all-around and first on vault. Makenzie placed in the top ten at both States and Regionals, earning a spot at the Eastern Championships. She finished her year by competing in the hopes division at the US Challenge.
Makenzie moved up to level ten in 2009. She easily won the all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. At the National Gymnastics Challenge, she swept the gold medals. Makenzie won vault, floor and the all-around at States. At Regionals, she placed in the top twenty. She ended her season at the American Challenge in the junior pre-elite division.
