Katia Helena Kivisto was born on December 10, 1985 in Boynton Beach, Florida. She is the daughter of Sharon and Jussi. She has two younger sisters, Brigitte and Hanna who both competde in gymnastics. Brigitte qualified to the JO National Championships a few times and competed for Yale. Katie began gymnastics in 1987. Katie trained at American Twisters with Tim and Toni Rand during her club career.
As a level 9 in 1998, Katie placed third all-around at the Region Championships. She moved up to level 10 in 1999. At the JO National Championships, Katie won floor and finished third all-around. Katie competed at the American Classic in 2000. She placed 21st all-around. In 2001, Katie did very well. She placed seventh all-around at the SU Classic. At nationals, she finished 11th and made the national team. Katie finished sixth all-around at the American Classic. She then helped the USA team win over Belgium. At the Puerto Rico Cup, she finished third all-around and won beam. Her final meet of the 2002 season was the US Classic. She finished 13th all-around! In 2003, Katie qualified to the national championships by placing 26th at the US Classic. At nationals, she became injured and could not finish the competition.
As a freshman at the University of Utah, she competed on uneven bars. She often was the starter. Katie also competed on beam and floor. As a sophomore, she dislocated her elbow in a pre-meet bar warm up in March. She was the lead-off competitor. In 2007, she was Utah's Most Inspirational Gymnast. She overcame her elbow injury to earn a starting spot on floor. She competed twice on bars before an elbow injury kept her out the rest of the season. She hit all nine of her floor routines. Katie made the Dean's List and Athletics Academic Honor Roll. She was also an NACGC Scholastic All-American. As a senior, she was named an MWC Scholar-Athlete Award. She was again an NACGC Academic All-American and on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List. She continued to be an instrumental part of Utah's floor lineup as a senior.
