Chari Knight-Hunter was born on July 7, 1972 in Milwaukie, Oregon. Chari began gymnastics in 1978. She graduated from Oregon State University. She trained at American Gymnastics Training Center after college. In 1996, she competed for the National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics. When Chari made a comeback in 2002, she trained at Hill's Gymnastics in Maryland. In 2004, she competed for Marvateens. Chari moved to New York in 2005. She trained at Galaxy Gymnastics for the 2006 competition season.
In 1988, she made her first national championship performance. Chari placed third all-around at the 1989 US Classic. At Nationals that year she finished 12th all-around. Chari competed at the World Team Trials, finishing eighth. Chari was able to travel to Nagoya for the Chunichi Cup that year. In 1990 Chari competed at the National Championships and the Olympic Sports Festival. She traveled to Germany for the Cottbus Cup as well.
Chari competed for Oregon State University from 1991-1994. At the 1991 NCAA Championships she finished fifth all-around and third on bars. She also competed at the World University Games. Chari finished third all-around. At the 1994 NCAA Championships she finished fourth on beam. She competed level 10 in 1996. At the JO National Championships Chari won the all-around title. She also won the beam title. In 1997, Chari began competing elite again. At the US Nationals she finished fourth on bars. Chari finished seventh all-around at the US Classic in 1998.
She made another comeback in 2002. Chari competed as a senior national elite at the 2002 American Challenge. She finished first overall. Chari finished sixth at the 2002 US Classic as a senior national elite. She qualified to the National Championships. In 2003 Chari made her second appearance at the National Championships. In 2006, Chari trained at Galaxy Gymnastics in New York. As a level 10, she finished first all-around at the New York State Championships. Chari also did well at the JO Nationals.
