Kayla Tigert was born on April 23, 1991. Her sister, Kaytlin, is also a gymnast. Kayla trained at Woodland Gymnastics where she was coached by Liz Crandall. When Woodland shut their team program down in 2004, she followed Crandall to Davis Gymnastics for a year before Crandall opened up her own gym, International Gymnastics Centre. After Crandall moved out of the area following the 2007 season, Kayla moved to Technique Gymnastics where she trained the remainder of her club career. She graduated from high school in 2009.
In 2003, Kayla competed level seven in 2003. She finished in the top ten at the State Championships. She moved up to level eight in 2004. She finished 12th all-around at the State Championships. in 2005, she won vault, floor and the all-around at the Flips USA Invitational. Kayla placed first on vault and second all-around at both the Golden State Classic and Hard Rock Invite. She won vault, bars and the all-around at the Wine Country Classic. At the State Championships, Kayla placed third all-around. She finished seventh all-around at Regionals. In 2006, Kayla finished third all-around at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge. She also finished third all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won uneven bars. She finished second all-around.
Kayla began competing level nine in 2007. She finished second all-around at the International Cup. She placed third on bars at the Flips USA Invitational and third on vault at the Golden State Classic. Kayla finished first on bars, beam and the all-around at the State Championships. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she finished fourth on bars. In 2008, Kayla won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the National Judges Cup. She won vault, floor and the all-around at the IGI Chicago Style. Kayla placed second all-around at the Golden State Classic. At the State Championships, she won bars. Kayla placed third on bars and fifth all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed second on bars and tenth all-around.
She concluded her club career in 2009 as a level nine. She won beam at the Lady Luck Invitational. Kayla won bars and floor at the Long Beach Open. She won bars at the Golden State Classic. At the State Championships, Kayla won bars and beam. She finished second all-around. She also won bars at Regionals. She placed second all-around. At Westerns, Kayla placed first on bars and sixth on floor. She finished ninth all-around. She did not compete as a freshman at CSUF.
