Talia Kushynski was born on October 19, 1989. She has one younger sister, Gina, who also attends UCLA. Talia started competing for Lyons Gymnastics. She trained at Team Le Club from 2001 to 2005. She spent a year at Scats HB before moving to Waller's Gym Jam in 2007.

In 2001, Talia competed level seven. She competed level eight in 2002. She qualified for Regionals. Talia moved up to level nine in 2003. Talia finished high enough at Regionals to qualify for the Western Championships. She moved up to level ten in 2004. She competed only one event at States but petitioned to Regionals. In 2005, Talia finished fourth all-around at States. She won a silver medal on bars and a bronze medal on floor. She finished tenth all-around at Regionals. Talia had a strong 2006 season. She won a gold medal on beam at the Spirals Invitational. She finished third on beam at the Surf City Classic and Golden State Friendship Challenge. At States, she finished third on bars, floor and the all-around. Talia ended her season at Regionals.

She ended her club career in 2007 with Wallers. She won beam at the Golden State Friendship Challenge. At States, she placed third on bars and fourth all-around. As a freshman at UCLA, she competed once on floor. She saw exhibition time on beam and floor. As a sophomore, she was named an NACGC/W Scholastic All-American. Talia continued exhibitioning on floor. Talia competed on floor at Fullerton in 2010 as a junior.
