Sydney Laird was born on September 5, 1999. Sydney started taking classes in 2003 at Marian Gymnastics in Canada. She began training at First in Flight after moving to North Carolina in 2008 where she trained through the 2009 season. She then spent two years with Precision before returning to First in Flight. She will graduate from high school in 2017.
In the fall of 2008, Sydney competed level six. She placed third on vault and first on floor at the State Championships. She immediately competed level seven in 2009. Sydney finished first on floor and the all-around at the Beach Break. She finished third on floor at the National Gymnastics Challenge. She finished third on floor at the State Championships. Sydney competed level eight in 2010. She won beam at the Tiger Paw Classic. She finished first on bars and floor at the Sparkle City Invitational. At the State Championships, she finished fifth on bars. In 2011, Sydney won bars and floor at the Flip Fest Invitational. She finished first on bars at the Tiger Paw Classic. At the Greensboro Invitational, she won beam. Sydney won bars and beam at the Charleston Cup. She placed third all-around at the State Championships. Sydney finished first on floor and fourth all-around at Regionals.
Sydney competed level nine in 2012. She finished first on floor at the Gasparilla Classic. She moved up to level ten in 2013. She won vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She placed third all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. She finished fourth all-around at the Gasparilla Classic. She competed on one event at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished seventh all-around. She finished 29th all-around at JO Nationals.
Sydney started her 2012-2013 season at the Elite Canada Screening in Regina, Saskatchewan. She finished first all-around. Sydney won vault bars, beam and the all-around at The Gala meet as a level ten. She won vault and the all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. She finished first on bars, beam, floor and the all-around at the Sand Dollar Invitational. She reached junior high performance elite at the 2014 Elite Canada meet. She finished fourth all-around. She qualified to three event finals where she placed fourth on vault, fifth on balance beam and sixth on floor exercise. Sydney finished first on uneven bars, balance beam and in the all-around with a 38.000 at the Greensboro Invitational. At the State Championships, she earned gold medals on balance beam, floor exercise and in the all-around. Sydney placed fourth in the all-around at the Region 8 Championships. She qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals in Jackson, MS where she finished 11th on uneven bars and 12th on balance beam. At the end of May, Sydney competed at the Canadian Nationals where she placed eighth in the all-around and seventh on floor exercise in the event finals. She was named to the Canadian Junior National Team in August. In November, she competed at the Coupe Avenior in Belgium where she placed third all-around. Sydney qualified to three event finals on the next day where she earned a gold medal on uneven bars. She also placed sixth on balance beam and seventh on floor exercise. The next weekend, she won a silver in the all-around at the Top Gym Tournament. She finished fourth on vault and sixth on uneven bars in event finals.
