Jami Lanz was born in Eugene, Oregon on July 14, 1987. She is the daughter of Lori and Brent. She has a younger brother, Chad. She trained at the National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics under coaches Linda Mulvihill and Rosen Manolov during her club career.

In 2001, Jami competed as a level ten. She finished seventh all-around at the JO National Championships. She qualified to the JO National Championships again in 2003. She finished fourth on vault and uneven bars. In 2004, Jami placed sixth on vault at the JO National Championships. She won the regionla all-around title in 2005. She finished sixth on vault and fifth on floor at the JO National Championships.

In the fall of 2005, she began attending school at Oregon State University. Despite nagging heel and ankle injuries, Jami competed at every meet. She earned the honor of Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Jami competed all-around in several meets. She was named Oregon State's Most Valuable Gymnast and Co-Female Newcomer of the Year. During her sophomore year, she was a second-team All-American on uneven bars. She competed in the all-around at every meet for the second year in a row. She earned seventeen individual event titles including five in the all-around and four on beam. She was an All-PAC-10 selection in the all-around.

As a junior, she won the Pac-10 title on beam and the NCAA Regional title on beam. She earned All-American status on beam. She won eight titles during the season. She earned a total of 18 titles during the 2008 season. She earned All-Pac-10 honors in the all-around. For the third year she competed in the all-around at every meet. As a senior, she earned her fourth all-Pac-10 honors in the all-around. She won five event titles. She competed in the all-around at every meet for the fourth year in a row. She earned second-team All-American status on vault.
