Lauren Smith was born on June 11, 1991. She trained at Texas Elite Gymnastics Academy during her club career. Lauren graduate from high school in 2009. She spent her first two years in college at Texas Tech, where she competed for their club team. She transferred to Oklahoma in the fall of 2011.

In 2003, Lauren competed level seven. She moved up to level eight in 2004. She finished in the top fifteen at the State Championships. She placed in the top twenty at Regionals. In 2006, Lauren competed level nine. She finished in the top twenty at the State Championships. Lauren placed third on bars at Regionals in 2007. She finished 12th all-around. Lauren moved up to level ten in 2008. She was the alternate for JO Nationals. In 2009, she placed third on bars at the Alamo Classic.

As a club gymnast at Texas Tech, Lauren finished second all-around at the 2011 NAIGC National Championships. She also placed second on bars and floor.
