Kristen Ann Maloney was born in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania on March 10, 1981. She was the third child born to Richard and Linda. She has an older sister, Carrie and an older brother, Shawn. She began gymnastics in 1987. She trained at Parkettes during her college career. In the fall of 2000, Kristen began school at UCLA.

In 1993, she competed as a junior international elite. She finished seventh all-around and second on floor at the US Classic. At the Heathrow Gold Cup, she won the all-around, beam, and vault title. She also competed at the US National Championships. She made her first national team.

Kristen continued to compete as a junior in 1994. She finished eighth all-around at the American Classic. At the US Olympic Festival, Kristen placed fifth all-around. She finished fourth all-around at the US Classic. At the Sunshine Cup in Nassau, Bahamas, she placed third on floor. Kristen won a bronze on beam at the Catania Cup.

Her first year as a senior international elite was in 1995. Kristen competed at the American Classic and US National Championships. She finished fourth on beam at the Trophee Massilia. She finished tenth all-around at the 1996 American Classic. Kristen placed seventh all-around at the US Classic. She then went to the World Star Competition in Moscow, Russia. She placed ninth all-around. Kristen went to Kuantan, Malaysia for the Pacific Alliance Championships. She finished fifth all-around. At the US National Championships, Kristen placed high enough to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

She continued competing as an elite in 1997. She finished sixth all-around at the Visa American Cup. Kristen helped the USA team finish second at the International Team Championships. Her next meet was the American Classic. She won the all-around Title. At the US National Championships, she fell on bars on the first day. Kristen still finished fourth all-around. She was named for the World Championship Team. Kristin made event finals on beam. She competed at the Foxsport Challenge in Australia. She won the all-around, vault, bars and floor titles!

Kristen started 1998 out by finished third all-around at the Visa American Cup. She then led the USA team to first place at the International Team Championships. She also won the all-around title. Kristen placed first all-around at the American Classic. She then won the Pacific Alliance All-around Title in Canada. She also won beam at the Goodwill Games. Kristen won her first US National All-Around Title!

Her shin injury continued to bother her in 1999. She finished second all-around at the International Team Championships. She did defend her US National Title. Kristen competed at the World Championships. The Olympic Year was in 2000. She placed second all-around at the US National Championships. Kristen won vault and floor. She then placed third all-around at the Olympic Trials. She was named to the Olympic Games Team. Kristen qualified to all-around finals at the Olympics.

In the 2001 NCAA season, she had eighteen top three finishes. She also became the first Bruin to score a ten on beam. She earned first team All-American honors despite a serious leg injury. Kristen red shirted the 2002 season. She sat out of the 2003 season with a leg injury. She made her comeback in 2004. Kristen earned All-American honors on vault, bars, beam and in the all-around. She was the pac-10 beam champion. She received the UCLA C.H.A.M.P.S Inspirational Award. During her senior season, she won the NCAA Vault and Balance Beam Titles. She also won the Honda Award. SI On Campus named Kristen National Gymnast Of The Year
