McKenna Archer was born on October 22, 1991. Her younger sister, Alex, is a gymnast at Stanford. McKenna began gymnastics at Costa Mesa Parks & Recreation. She trained at New Hope through the 2003 season. She then moved to Wildfire for two years. McKenna trained at SCEGA from 2006 to February 2007 before moving to Team OC. McKenna graduated from high school in 2009.
In 2001, McKenna competed level five. She placed second all-around at the Balloon Classic. She finished third all-around at West Sectionals. She placed second on beam and seventh all-around at the State Championships. She moved up to level six in 2002. She finished fourth all-around and second on bars at the State Championships. She competed level seven in 2003 and 2004. She won floor at the San Diego Classic. At the California Classic, she won beam, floor and the all-around. She placed second all-around at the State Championships. She won vault and beam. McKenna competed level eight in 2005. She won beam and floor at the Surf City Classic. At the State Championships, she won floor. McKenna won bars, beam and floor at Regionals. She placed second all-around.
McKenna competed level nine in 2006. She finished first on floor at the San Diego Classic. She placed third on vault at the Hard Rock Invitational. In 2007, she placed second on floor at the Lady Luck Invitational. She placed third all-around at both the IGHOF Invitational and San Diego Classic. At the State Championships, she placed third all-around. She finished in the top twenty at Regionals. McKenna began competing level ten in 2008. She finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals. In 2009, McKenna won vault at the Wine Country Classic. At the State Championships, she won beam. She finished in the top fifteen at Regionals.
As a freshman at Cornell in 2010, McKenna competed on vault, beam and floor. She continued to compete on vault, beam and floor in 2011. She won vault at the ECAC Championships. At the Towson Invitational, she set the fourth-best vault score in school history.
