McKayla Maroney was born on December 9, 1995. She trained at National Gymnastics Training Center. She moved to Gym-Max in 2005. McKayla began training at All Olympia Gymnastics Center in the spring of 2010.

She competed level five in 2004. She won vault at the Flips USA Invitational. She placed second all-around. She competed level six during the fall season. She finished fourth all-around at Sectionals. McKayla moved up to level seven in 2005. She finished second all-around at the State Championships. She placed second on vault and floor. She began competing level eight in 2006. She won bars at the San Diego Classic. She placed fourth all-around. At the Surf City Classic, she won vault, beam and the all-around. She won vault, beam and the all-around with a 38.525 at the Long Beach Open. At States, she won vault and floor. She placed second all-around. She ended her season at Regionals. She won vault, floor and the all-around. She placed second on beam and third on bars.

In 2007, McKayla competed level nine. She finished second on vault and first on floor at the LA Classic. She finished third all-around. At the Surf City Classic, she won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She finished second all-around at the Long Beach Open. She won floor. At States, she won vault. She placed third all-around. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals. McKayla finished second all-around at Westerns. She also placed second on beam. She tied for fourth on vault.

McKayla began competing level ten in 2008. At the National Judges Cup, she won vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She won vault at the LA Classic. She placed second all-around. At the AOGC Invitational, she won vault with a 9.900. She also won the all-around. She finished second on vault and third on floor at the Top Flight Invite. At States, she won vault. She placed second on floor and in the all-around. She finished fourth all-around at Regionals. She tied for first on vault and floor. At JO Nationals, she won vault!

She opened 2009 by finishing second on vault at the OC Classic. At the Long Beach Open, she won floor and finished second all-around. She qualified to junior international elite at the Metroplex Challenge. She competed at the American Classic. At the US Classic, she qualified for the US National Championships. McKayla debuted a new vault, a Yurchenko 2.5. She won a bronze medal on this event. In 2010, she finished third all-around at the Team OC Invitational and first at the Long Beach Open. She qualified to the US National Championships at the elite qualifier at Arizona State. At the US Classic, she finished second on vault and seventh all-around. McKayla finished third all-around at the US National Championships! She won vault and finished fourth on floor. She also made her first US National Team.
