Megan Mashburn was born on April 28, 1989. She trained at Greenville Gymnastics through the 2000 season. She then moved to Electric City. Megan began training at Haydens Gymnastics in 2005. She graduated from high school in 2007.

In 1998, Megan competed level four. She won vault at the First Sectional. She moved up to level five in 2000. She won bars at the Charleston Cup. She competed level six in 2001. She finished second on bars at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. In 2002, Megan competed level seven. She finished first on bars and second all-around at the Charleston Cup. She also competed in USAIGC. In 2004, Megan finished first on vault and floor at the Carolina Classic as a level nine. She won vault, beam and the all-around at Regionals. At Easterns, she placed third all-around. She also placed second on vault and eighth on bars and floor.

Megan moved up to level ten in 2005. She competed at Regionals. In 2006, Megan finished seventh on vault at JO Nationals. Megan finished third all-around at Regionals in 2007. She competed at JO Nationals. As a freshman at Alabama in 2008, Megan was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and Dean's List. She was a Scholastic All-American. Megan exhibitioned on vault and floor. During her sophomore season in 2009, she competed on vault seven times. She also competed on bars. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was a Scholastic All-American. In 2010, Megan competed on vault against Arizona and at Penn State. She was a Scholastic All-American and on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
