Mary Atkinson was born on December 8, 1988. She trained at Ocean Tumblers during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2007.
In 2002, Mary competed as a junior national elite. She competed at the American Challenge. Mary competed at the National Podium Meet in 2003. In 2004, she won uneven bars at the State Championships. Mary won bars, floor and the all-around at the 2005 State Championships. At Regionals, she placed fifth all-around. Mary finished second on bars, eighth all-around and ninth on vault at JO Nationals. In 2006, Mary won floor at the Hard Rock Invitational. She finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed second on vault and third on bars. Mary won bars, beam and the all-around at the 2007 State Championships.
As a freshman at Arizona State in 2008, Mary competed on vault in every meet and bars in nearly every meet. She competed on floor five times. During her sophomore season, she continued to compete on vault and floor. She was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second-team. In 2010, Mary competed in the all-around at every meet. She qualified to the NCAA Championships as an individual. She earned All-American honors on vault. During her senior season, she competed in five meets before tearing her ACL on her last floor pass at Oregon State. She earned the Pac-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
