Katherine Matusik was born to Mary and Mike in Plano, Texas on July 18, 1990. She has two older siblings, Mikey and Jonny. She began recreational gymnastics classes at the age of three in 1993 at University of Gymnastics. She has trained at WOGA for the last several years under Valeri Liukin and Natalya Markova.

In 2001, Katie competed as a level eight. She won the WOGA Classic. Katie won the WOGA Classic in 2002 as a level nine. She moved up to level ten for the rest of 2002. At the Texas State Championships, she finished second on beam. Katie ended her season at Regionals. She repeated level ten in 2003. She competed at the Parkette Invite. In 2004, Katie placed second all-around at the WOGA Classic. She was fourth all-around at the Presidential Classic. Katie did well at States and Regionals. She had a break through year in 2005. Katie qualified to the JO National Championships! She qualified by placing seventh all-around and second on beam at Regionals. In 2006, Katie placed fifth all-around at Regionals. She competed at her second JO National Championships! Katie qualified for JO Nationals in 2007 and 2008. She won beam at Regionals in 2008.

As a freshman at Arizona, she competed on beam. She won beam against Cal.
