Michelle Browning was born on February 21, 1990 to Duke and Kerrin Browning. She has one sister, Laura, who competed track and field for Baylor. During her club career, Michelle trained at Champion Gymnastics Academy in Katy, Texas, under Kellie Mizoguchi.
In 2002, Michelle competed level nine. She won bars at Regionals. She finished sixth all-around. She ended her season at Westerns. She moved up to level ten in 2003. She was the alternate for JO Nationals. Michelle finished in the top twenty at Regionals in 2004. She won vault and floor at the 2005 Houston National Invitational. She had a great 2006 season. She won the all-around at the National Judges Cup and Kurt Thomas Invitational. At the State Championships, she won bars, floor and the all-around! At Regionals, she won bars, beam, floor and the all-around. She ended her season at JO Nationals. She finished first on floor and second on beam.
Michelle continued to have strong results in 2007. She won her second straight all-around title at the State Championships. Michelle finished third all-around at Regionals. She won floor. At JO Nationals, she finished second on bars. During her senior year in 2008, Michelle won bars and floor at the Rose City Classic. She won the all-around and uneven bars titles at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she finished sixth on beam.
Michelle made an immediate impact at Iowa State University, earning ISU Freshman of the Year honors. She competed on vault and floor at every meet.
