Missouri native Courtney McCool was born on April 1, 1988. She is the daughter of Mike and Lind. Courtney began gymnastics at the age of eight. During her elite career, she trained at GAGE with Al Fong and Armine Barutyan-Fong.

In 2001, she competed as a level ten. At the Parkette Invitational, Courtney finished first all-around! Her final meet of the season was the JO National Championships. Courtney took home the all-around title! Besides the all-around title, she won bars and took home the silver on beam.

In the beginning of 2002, Courtney competed at a few open invitationals. She finished second on vault at the Parkette Invite. She finished second all-around at the Dragon Invitational. At her first elite meet, the Podium Meet, Courtney finished within the top fifteen competitors.

She came into her own at the American Classic. Besides becoming an official international elite, she was added to the US National Team and qualified for the National Championships. In the summer, she competed at the US Classic. She ended her 2002 season at the National Championships. Courtney finished just one spot away from making the national team.

Opting to compete as a junior international elite again, Courtney began her 2003 season at the Parkette Invitational. At the National Podium Meet, she finished fifth all-around! Courtney won the silver medal in the all-around at the American Classic! A few months later, she took home the silver again at the US Classic. Not to the surprise of many, she took home second place at the US National Championships. This qualified her for the US National Team.

Shortly after, she was named to the Pan American Team! Courtney assisted the USA to a team gold medal. She placed second on vault. In November, she traveled to France for the Trophee Massilia. Courtney was third in the all-around competition. She won beam in the event finals.

2004 was her first year as a senior international elite. She traveled to Hawaii for the Gymnastics in Paradise meet. Courtney swept the gold medals. Her next meet was the American Cup in New York. She performed like a seasoned veteran to take home the silver in the all-around. Her next competition was the Olympic Test Event in Greece. Courtney took home the all-around title. In the event finals, she finished second on vault and third on bars.

She then went to Tennesee for the US National Championships. Everything went well until she ripped off the bars on her dismount. Courtney rallied on day two to finish fourth all-around. At the Olympic Trials, she finished second all-around. This gave her a position on the US Olympic Team. She proved her readiness at the Olympic Selection Camp. In Athens, Courtney brought home a silver team medal.

Courtney toured with the Rock and Roll Tour after the Olympics. She sat out 2005 and 2006 with a potential career-ending wrist injury. However, after a long recovery, Courtney returned at the University of Georgia. In 2007, she competed on beam and floor. She won the Regional Title on floor. As a sophomore, she won the NCAA title on floor. She was a first-team All-American. Courtney was also a member of the second-team All-SEC. She palced second on bars and beam at the SEC Championships. She tied for both the NCAA Regional beam and floor titles. She was named SEC Gymnast of the Week after the LSU meet. Courtney won the floor title in the first nine meets.

During her junior year in 2009, she competed on bars and beam. She scored a perfect ten on beam.
