Mackenzie McGill was born on June 13, 1992. She trained at ConocoPhillips Gymnastics in Bartlesville, Oklahoma under Sam and Susie Barto. She graduated from high school in 2010.

In 2002, Mackenzie competed level eight. She finished 16th all-around at Regionals. She continued competing level eight in 2003. She placed fourth on floor at Regionals. She finished 12th all-around. She moved up to level nine in 2004. She qualified to Regionals but did not compete. In 2005, Mackenzie finished in the top thirty all-around at Westerns. She won bars at the National Judges Cup in 2006. She finished eighth all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed sixth on bars and floor. She finished 18th all-around.

Mackenzie continued competing level nine in 2007. She won the all-around title at the National Judges Cup. At Regionals, she placed second on bars. She finished 12th all-around at Westerns. Mackenzie placed fourth all-around at Westerns in 2008. She placed on every event, finishing seventh on vault, bars, and beam and second on floor. In 2009, Mackenzie won the all-around title at the State Championships. She won bars and the all-around at Regionals. She placed third on bars, fifth on beam, second on floor and second all-around at Westerns. Mackenzie moved up to level ten in 2010. She won bars at the Superstar Invitational. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She did not compete on floor at Regionals.

As a freshman at Missouri in 2011, Mackenzie exhibitioned on bars four times.
