Kayla McMullan was born on May 10, 1996. She has three sisters, Katie, Kellie and Mackenzie. All three have competed in gymnastics. Kayla began competing for Arizona Dynamics Gymnastics. She moved to Desert Lights in the summer of 2005. After the 2009 season, Kayla switched to Desert Devils Gymnastics. She will graduate in 2014.

In the fall of 2003, Kayla competed as a level four. She finished second on vault and fourth all-around at the PGA Invitational. At the State Meet, she finished fourth all-around. She placed second on vault and first on bars. She continued competing level four in the spring of 2004. She finished fourth all-around at the Cactus Cup. At the Spring State Championships, she placed third on vault and beam. She finished second all-around. She moved up to level five for the fall season. Kayla finished fifth on vault at the Rock-n-Roll Classic. She ended her season at the State Meet.

During the spring season of 2005, Kayla continued competing level five. She won vault at the Winter Sun Invitational. She finished fifth all-around at the Shamrock Invitational. Kayla placed in the top ten at the Spring State Meet. Kayla had stronger results in the fall season. She won vault, bars and the all-around at the School Days Invitational. At the PGA Invitational, she finished second on vault, first on beam and second all-around. She won vault, floor and the all-around at the Halloween Invitational. She ended her season by winning floor at the State Championships. She finished second on vault, beam and the all-around.

She began competing level six in the spring of 2006. She finished fourth on vault and bars at the Winter Sun Invitational. She won vault and placed second on bars at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. Kayla won vault again at the Flagstaff Winter Classic. In the fall, she won floor at the School Days Invitational. She placed third all-around. At the PGA Invitational, she won bars and finished second all-around. She won vault and floor at the Halloween Invitational. At the Fall Round Up, she won vault, bars and the all-around. She ended her season at States. She finished second on bars and in the all-around. She placed third on floor.

Kayla immediately began competing level seven in the spring of 2007. She started her season by winning vault, bars and the all-around at the Winter Sun Invitational. At the Fiesta Bowl Invitational, she won vault and the all-around. Kayla won vault at the Buckeye Classic in Ohio. She placed first on bars at the Tucson Invitational. At the State Championships, Kayla finished second on vault and in the all-around.

She moved up to level eight in 2008. She started her season by finishing fifth all-around at the Winter Sun Invitational. At the Fiesta Bowl Invitational, she placed second on bars and floor. She won the all-around. At the Golden State Classic, Kayla finished second on floor. She won vault, bars and floor at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished second on vault. Kayla qualified to hopes in the summer. She competed at the US Challenge. She was limited in 2009 because of an elbow injury. She returned at the end of the season to finish second on beam and floor at the Level 9 State Championships. She finished ninth all-around at Regionals.

Kayla continued competing level nine with her new gym in 2010. She finished fifth all-around at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational and fourth all-around at the Classic Rock Invitational. She placed second on floor at the Long Beach Open. Kayla won floor at the Malibu Coast Challenge. At the State Championships, she won vault. She finished second on bars, floor and the all-around. She ended her season at Regionals with a fourth place finish on floor. Unfortunately, Kayla balked on her vault which kept her down in the standings.
