Melissa Doucette was born on December 25, 1990 to Theresa and Dean Doucette. She has one brother and one sister. Her sister, Samantha, is also a gymnast. She began gymnastics at the age of five at Kelly's Gymnastics. She moved to Atlantic Gymnastics Training Center at the age of ten. She quit gymnastics at the age of 13 but returned three years later in 2006. After moving high schools, she was forced to complete a fifth year after credits did not transfer, graduating in 2010.
In 2002, Melissa competed level eight. She finished sixth all-around at Regionals. She moved up to level nine in 2003. She finished fourth on bars and sixth all-around at Regionals. She competed at Easterns. After a several year break, Melissa competed level ten in 2008. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She placed sixth all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals.
Melissa continued competing level ten in 2009. She finished fourth on vault at the Team Challenge and third on vault at the American Flyer's Cup. She won bars and beam at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished second on vault and bars. Melissa finished 23rd all-around at JO Nationals. In 2010, she placed second all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals.
