Briana Melander was born on October 17, 1990. She trained at LaFleur's Largo through the 2003 season. She then spent two years with Tampa Bay Turners before returning to LaFleur's Largo. She graduated from high school in 2009.
In 2000, she competed level five. She finished second all-around at the Atlanta Crown Invitational. By 2003, she was competing level nine. In 2004, she won uneven bars and finished second all-around at Regionals. At Easterns, she placed sixth on beam and in the all-around. She moved up to level ten in 2005. She placed third on bars at the Cancun Classic. She finished fourth all-around and second on bars at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2006, Briana finished fourth on vault at the State Championships. She placed first on bars at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2007, Briana finished third all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals.
She continued competing level ten in 2008. Briana finished third all-around at the Tampa Bay Classic. She won vault at the State Championships. At Regionals, she won beam. Briana finished tenth all-around at JO Nationals. In 2009, she won beam and floor at the Hilton Head Island Invitational. She finished second on vault and third on beam at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational. At the State Championships, she placed second on floor. She finished eighth all-around at Regionals.
As a freshman at Maryland in 2010, she competed on beam in all thirteen meets. Briana was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
