Chellsie Marie Memmel was born on June 23, 1988 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Andrew and Jeanelle. They own M&M Gymnastics. Both of her parents are former gymnasts. She has two sisters. Mara is a former rhythmic gymnast. Skyler was a National TOPs Team member. She trained at M&M Gymnastics from 1992 to 1995. She then trained at Salto Gymnastics with Jim Chudy until 2005. Chellsie now trains with her dad again.
In 1998, she competed as a level ten. She qualified to the JO National Championships. In 1999, Chellsie competed as a child national elite. She won the American Challenge and US Challenge. She qualified to junior international elite in 2000. Chellsie placed seventh all-around at the American Classic. She won the Puerto Rican Cup. At the US National Championships, Chellsie qualified to her first US National Team. She also participated in the USA vs. France meet at the end of 2000. She did not compete in 2001 because of a nagging hamstring injury.
Her final year as a junior international elite was in 2002. Her first meet back was the National Elite Podium Meet. She finished 12th all-around. Chellsie moved up to tenth place at the American Classic. She was selected for the Pacific Alliance Championships. Chellsie competed as an alternate. She then won the all-around at the USA vs. Belgium Meet. In the summer, Chellsie competed at the US Classic. She finished fourth all-around. The next day was the Team Cup competition. She won the competition, beating many seniors. At the US National Championships, Chellsie placed third all-around! She then went to the USA vs. Mexico dual meet. She finished third all-around. Chellsie also went to the USA/Brazil/Ukraine meet. She helped the USA team win.
Chellsie decided to compete as a senior international elite in 2003. She finished third all-around at the National Elite Podium Meet in the junior division. At the American Classic, she finished third all-around and first on bars and beam. This was in the senior division. At the Pacific Challenge, Chellsie unofficially won the all-around title. This was because two of her events were exhibition. She had a broken foot that bothered her at the US National Championships. Chellsie was named to the Pan American Games team. She won the all-around title! She also won bars and finished third on beam. Because of this performance, Chellsie was selected as the world team alternate. After Ashley Postell became sick, Chellsie was added to the team. She led the USA team to a gold medal. The next day, she finished eighth all-around. In the event finals, Chellsie tied with Hollie Vise for the uneven bars gold! She also competed in beam finals. In the fall, she went on the TJ Maxx Tour.
She competed at the American Cup in the beginning of 2004. She finished third all-around. Chellsie broke her foot in April. This kept her out of the US National Championships and Olympic Trials. She was named as an alternate to the Olympic Team. She came back in the fall to win the uneven bars title at the World Cup Final. She then went to the PanAm Individual Championships. Chellsie finished first on bars and beam. In 2005, Chellsie came back better than ever. She won the uneven bars title and finished third on beam at the American Cup. She went on the European Tour with the USA team. Chellsie won bars against Great Britain and vault again Switzerland. In July, she competed at the US Classic. Chellsie had a few falls but debuted her new double layout. At Nationals, Chellsie finished second all-around with a fall on balance beam. She then went to the Pan American Championships. She won the all-around, bars and beam titles! To no surprise, Chellsie was named to the World Team. In a major upset, she won the all-around title beating Nastia Liukin by .001. She finished second on bars and beam. Chellsie had ankle surgery after Worlds. She came back to win the Pacific Alliance Championships. Chellsie also won the beam title. She skipped the US Classic with a shoulder injury. Chellsie did not compete her best at the US National Championships because of the injury. At World, Chellsie fell on bars in team finals. On her next move, she re-injured her shoulder. She was forced to scratch from the rest of the meet.
Chellsie spent most of 2007 recovering from shoulder surgery. She finished fifth on vault at the US Classic. She competed on floor only at the US National Championships. In the fall, she competed at the Good Luck Beijing International Tournament. She placed third on beam and floor. At the Toyota Cup, she won floor and placed second on beam. In 2008, Chellsie won bars and placed third all-around at the Friendship International Exchange. At the US National Championships, she finished third all-around. She placed second on bars. At the Olympic Trials, she placed third all-around. She finished second on bars, beam and floor. She was named to the Olympic Team. An ankle injury limited her to bars only. She fell during preliminaries. Chellsie assisted the United States team to second place.
