Michelle Ikoma was born on March 19, 1991. Her older sister, Danielle, is also a gymnast. Michelle trained at Naperville Gymnastics through the 2001 season. She then moved to Arena Gymnastics. Michelle graduated from high school in 2009.
In 2003, Michelle competed level nine. She finished fourth on bars and 18th all-around at Easterns. She moved up to level ten in 2004. She placed eighth all-around at Regionals, earning an alternate spot for JO Nationals. In 2006, Michelle won vault, bars and beam at the GymQuarters Invitational. She finished second on bars at Regionals. Michelle won vault and bars at the 2007 Bravo Classic. She finished second all-around at both the Hard Rock invitational and Midwest Open. At JO Nationals, she finished seventh on bars and 14th all-around.
Michelle continued competing level ten in 2008. She finished second all-around at the Bravo Classic. Michelle won the Surf City Classic. At the Harley Davidson Invitational, she placed first on vault, floor and in the all-around. Michelle finished second all-around at Regionals. At JO Nationals, she placed fourth on bars, sixth on vault, tenth on floor and sixth all-around. In 2009, Michelle won vault and bars at the Bravo Classic. She finished first on bars and the all-around at the Arena Classic. At Regionals, Michelle placed first on beam and in the all-around. She ended her club career at JO Nationals, placing sixth on vault, tenth on bars and ninth all-around.
As a freshman at the University of North Carolina, Michelle competed on all four events throughout the season. She finished second on vault at William & Mary. She competed on vault and floor at both the EAGL Championships and NCAA Regional meet.
