Shannon Mitchell was born on November 20, 1993. Shannon will graduate from Walter Johnson High School in 2011. She currently trains at Hill's Gymnastics under Kelli Hill.

Shannon competed level five in 2001. She won vault at the State Championships. She finished seventh all-around out of 43. She moved up to level six in 2002. At the State Championships, she won beam. She placed fifth all-around. Shannon made her first National TOPs Team in the fall. As a level seven in 2003, Shannon finished second on floor and in the all-around at States. She placed third on floor. She also had the second highest score out of every division, earning a spot on the State Team. She again made the National TOPs Team. During her 2004 season, Shannon won floor and placed second all-around at States as a level eight. Shannon earned a spot on the Maryland State Team because she had one of the top six all-around scores in the State for level eight. She earned a spot on the National TOPs Team for the third time.

In 2005, she competed level nine. She finished in the top fifteen all-around at Regionals, qualifying for Level 9 Easterns. She continued competing level nine in 2006. She won a bronze on beam at the State Meet. She finished in the top twenty all-around at the Level 9 Eastern Championships. With Paragon Gymnastics, Shannon competed level ten in 2007 and 2008. She qualified for States and Regionals both years. In 2008, she finished second all-around and first on beam at the Star Struck Invitational. She also competed for her high school. As a freshman, she finished third all-around at County. She placed second all-around at States and first on uneven bars. She was named to All-Gazette Team.

Shannon began her 2008-2009 season with the Christmas on the Chesapeake meet in December. She finished third on vault, beam and floor. In January, Shannon placed third on vault and second on beam at the Maryland Classic. She then competed at the Parkette Invitational and Fiesta Bowl Invitational. At the Byers Invitational, she finished second on bars and first on beam. She won the all-around. At the State Championships, Shannon won beam. She finished fourth on vault and in the all-around. At Regionals, she finished ninth all-around. She was named the alternate for JO Nationals. Shannon ended her season at the JO National Invitational Tournament. She finished third on vault and fourth all-around. She won beam.

During her 2009 high school season, Shannon was named Gazette Gymnast of the Year. She won her first individual county championship. In addition to the all-around, she won bars and beam. She was named honorable mention to the All-Met Washington Post Gymnastics Team.
