Makenzie Johnson was born on February 24, 1994. She trained at San Diego All-Stars before moving to Texas in 2004. Makenzie trained at Eagle's Wing Athletics for several years. She followed her coach to Elite Champion in the summer of 2011.
In 2002, Makenzie competed level five. She finished fourth all-around at the Southern California State Championships. She moved up to level six for the 2003 season. Makenzie finished fifth all-around at the Sectional meet, qualifying for States. After a year off from competition, she returned in 2005 as a level seven. Makenzie won beam at the North State Championships. At the Texas State Championships, she finished fourth on vault and bars.
Makenzie competed level eight in 2006. She finished third all-around at the Go For It Classic. At the State Championships, she finished fourth all-around and third on beam. Makenzie ended her season with a top ten performance at Regionals. In 2007, she competed her first year of level nine. She placed in the top ten at States and Regionals, earning bronze medals on beam at both meets. At Westerns, she finished fifth all-around and fourth on beam. Makenzie competed level nine again in 2008. She won vault at the AOGC Invitational. At Westerns, she finished 15th all-around.
In 2009, Makenzie competed level ten. She won bars and floor and placed second all-around at the Texas Prime. She again placed second all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. Makenzie won floor at the Rose City Classic. At States, she finished third on vault and sixth all-around. Makenzie again placed third on vault at Regionals. She placed eighth all-around, qualifying for the JO National Invitational Tournament where she won the all-around and vault! She continued competing level ten in 2010. She finished second all-around at the Winter Cup Challenge. At the Texas Prime Meet, she placed third all-around. Makenzie also finished third at the Metroplex Challenge. She placed second all-around at both the WOGA Classic and Nadia Comaneci Invitational. At the State Championships, she placed fifth all-around with a 37.375. Makenzie finished tenth all-around at Regionals. She ended her season at the JO National Invitational Tournament, placing second on vault.
In 2011, Makenzie placed eighth in the all-around at the Tiger Classic and tenth in the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. Makenzie won the all-around title as well as first on floor exercise and second on vault at the Houston National Invitational. At the Rose City Classic, she placed second in the all-around as well as second on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Makenzie placed impressive fifth in the all-around at the Level 10 Texas State Championships. There, she qualified to the Level 10 Regionals, where she won a silver medal on vault. She was invited to compete at the Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament in Long Beach, California and she placed second in the all-around, third on vault and fourth on uneven bars.
