McKenna Kelley was born on April 15, 1997 to Shannon Kelley and Mary Lou Retton. She has three sisters: Emma, Skyla and Shayla. Emma and Shayla are both gymnasts. McKenna trained at Stars Gymnastics until the fall of 2007. She then moved to Cypress. After moving to West Virginia, she began training at Mountain Magic. She will graduate from high school in 2015.
In the fall of 2006, McKenna competed level six. She placed third all-around at the State Championships. She finished second on vault. She began competing level eight in 2008. She finished second on vault at the State Championships. In 2009, McKenna placed second on vault at the Lady Luck Invitational. She won the all-around title at the Mary Lou Retton Invitational. She placed second on vault and bars at the WOGA Classic. McKenna finished in the top ten at the State Championships. She won floor at Regionals, where she also placed ninth all-around.
McKenna began competing level nine in 2010. She finished first on bars and floor at the Jingle Bell Rock Invitational. She won beam and the all-around at the Gatlinburg Classic. At the Arnold Gymnastics Challenge, she won beam, floor and the all-around. She finished first on bars, floor and the all-around at the State Championships. In 2011, McKenna won vault, beam, floor and the all-around at the Gatlinburg Classic. She won bars, beam, floor and the all-around at the Mardi Gras Invitational. At the Arnold Gymnastics Challenge, she placed first on vault, beam, floor and the all-around. She won vault and floor at the Girl Power Invitational. At Regionals, she won vault and the all-around. McKenna placed third on vault and first on floor at Easterns.
