Mackenzie McMullan was born on December 31, 1994. She has three sisters, Katie, Kellie and Kayla. All three have competed in gymnastics. Mackenzie began competing for Arizona Dynamics Gymnastics. She moved to Desert Lights in the summer of 2005. After the 2009 season, Mackenzie switched to Desert Devils Gymnastics.

In 2003, Mackenzie began competing level four. She finished third all-around at the PGA Invitational. At the State Championships, she won vault and placed second all-around. Mackenzie continued competing level four in the spring of 2004. She finished first on vault at the Mardi Gras Meet and Cactus Cup. At the Spring State Meet, she finished first sixth all-around. She moved up to level five in the fall season. She finished fourth all-around at the Rock-n-Roll Classic. At the State Championships, she won vault. In the spring, she finished first on vault at the Hard Rock Invitational and Mardi Gras meet. She placed second all-around at the Winter Sun Invitational and third at the Shamrock Invitational. At the Spring State Championships, she finished fourth all-around, third on vault and third on bars.

Mackenzie moved up to level six in the fall. She won vault and bars and placed second all-around at the School Days Invitational. At the PGA Invitational, she won vault. She finished in the top ten at the Halloween Invite. At the State Championships, she won vault and bars. She placed second all-around. Mackenzie immediately moved into level seven competition in 2006. She placed fourth all-around at the Flips Invitational. She won vault at the Winter Sun Invitational. At the Flagstaff Winter Classic, she won vault, bars and the all-around. She ended her season by winning vault at the State Championships.

She began competing level eight in 2007. She finished first on vault at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational and second on vault at the Buckeye Classic. At the State Championships, she placed in the top ten. Mackenzie ended her season with a top ten performance at Regionals. In 2008, Mackenzie began competing level nine. She finished in the top ten at several invitationals and at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed third on vault. Mackenzie missed the 2009 season. In 2010, Mackenzie returned to competition. She placed second all-around at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. She finished third at the Classic Rock Invitational. At the State Championships, she won vault and floor. She placed fourth all-around. She ended her season at Regionals. She placed first on floor and ninth all-around.
