Maddie Montoya was born on November 5, 1992. Her older sister, Amelia, is a gymnast at Utah State. Maddie trained at California Elite Sports Center through the 2005 season. She trained at Azarian for one season before moving to South Coast. She graduated from high school in 2010.
In 2002, Maddie competed level five. She won bars at the State Championships. She moved up to level six in 2003. She won vault, bars and the all-around at the State Championships. She immediately began competing level seven in 2004. She finished eleventh all-around at the State Championships. Maddie moved up to level eight in 2005. She placed third on bars at the Sa Diego Classic. She finished second all-around at the California Classic. Maddie placed in the top twenty at the State Championships and top fifteen at Regionals. Maddie competed level nine in 2006. She finished in the top fifteen at the State Championships.
Maddie competed level nine in 2007. She finished first on floor at the Heart of a Champion meet. At the State Championships, she placed third all-around. She competed at Regionals. Maddie moved up to level ten in 2008. She finished second all-around at the Golden State Friendship Challenge. At the State Championships, she won vault. She finished third on vault at Regionals. In 2009, Maddie placed third on beam at the San Diego Classic. She competed at the State Championships. Maddie competed on bars in two meets in 2010.
As a freshman at Sac State in 2011, Maddie competed on vault in eight meets. She also competed on bars and floor.
