Miranda Jo Russell was born on January 5, 1988. Both of her parents were collegiate gymnasts at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Miranda has two sisters. Her oldest sister, Rehana, competed for Minnesota. Dusti competes for Minnesota. Miranda trained at Oshkosh Gymnastics during her club career. She graduated from high school in 2006.
In 2001, Miranda competed level ten. She finished third on floor at the Sweetheart Invitational. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2002, Miranda placed tenth all-around at JO Nationals. She finished ninth on bars. Miranda won bars at Regionals in 2003. She finished 23rd all-around at JO Nationals. She did not compete in 2004. In 2005, Miranda finished first on vault, bars, floor and the all-around at the Vegas Vacation meet. She finished first all-around at the State Championships. She placed third on vault at Regionals. She won the all-around title at the State Championships in 2006. She won bars and the all-around at Regionals. She competed on beam only at JO Nationals.
After redshirting her freshman season in 2007, Miranda competed in all thirteen meets in 2008, including ten all-around performances. She won beam in the home quad meet. As a sophomore in 2009, Miranda competed two meets in the all-around, before tearing her ACL on beam in the third home meet. Miranda returned in 2010. She competed in thirteen meets. Miranda earned First-Team All-Pac-10 Academic honors. She won bars against Minnesota. In 2011, Miranda earned first-team All-Academic honors for the third consecutive year. She earned Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors in January.
