Mykayla Brooke Skinner was born on December 9, 1996 in Mesa, Arizona to Cris and Kym Skinner. She has three older siblings, Jeremy (25), Chelsea (22) and Katie (18). Currently, Mykayla is a homeschooled seventh grader, where her favorite subject is math. During Mykayla's spare time, she loves to scrapbooking and making jewlry.
When Mykayla was five, her older sister began taking gymnastics classes. Mykayla decided she wanted to take classes as well. She has been doing gymnastics ever since! Mykayla competed for Olympic Gymnastics and Olympus School of Gymnastics before moving to Desert Lights Gymnastics.
As a level 7 in 2006, Mykayla finished 12th in the all-around at the Liberty Classic. She then placed second in the all-around at the I Love Gymnastics Meet. Mykayla placed 11th and 7th in the all-around at the Shamrock Invitational and Flyin' High Invitational respectively. At the Level 7 State Championships, Mykayla placed eighth in the all-around and sixth on uneven bars. Mykayla placed second in the all-around at the Jessica Kleya Invitational and Grand Cayon State Games. She concluded her 2006 season at the First Fall Intersquad, where she won the all-around title.
In 2007, Mykayla began her season at the Winter Sun Invitational as a level 8. There, she placed 13th in the all-around. She then finished 10th in the all-around at the Fiesta Bowl Invitational. At the Level 8 State Championships, she finished ninth in the all-around and fifth on balance beam. Mykayla continued competing level eight in 2008. Mykayla placed seventh in the all-around at the San Diego Classic. She then placed second in the all-around and first on uneven bars at the Cactus Cup. At the Level 8 State Championships, she placed third in the all-around and fourth on vault and balance beam. There, she qualified to the Level 8 Regionals, where she finished 24th in the all-around and 10th on uneven bars. After Mykayla's 2008 season, she moved to Desert Lights Gymnastics.
Mykayla started her 2009 season at the Winter Sun Invitational as a level 9. There, she placed third in the all-around and first on vault and balance beam. After only one competition, Mykayla moved up to level 10. At the San Diego Classic, she finished seventh in the all-around. She then placed eighth and ninth in the all-around at the Fiesta Bowl and Hardrock Invitational respectively. At the Byers Invitational, Mykayla finished 13th in the all-around and seventh on balance beam. Mykayla won the all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor exercise titles at the Level 10 State Championships. At the Level 10 Regional Championships, Mykayla took the last spot to qualify to the Junior Olympic National Championships in Washington. Mykayla was crowned Junior A Vault Champion at the Junior Olympic Nationals.
After the Junior Olympic Nationals, Mykayla continued her 2009 season as an elite gymnast. At a local elite qualifier, she won the all-around title and qualified to junior pre-elite. She then traveled to Allentown, PA for the National Elite Qualifier. There, Mykayla finished fourth in the all-around, second on vault and third on balance beam. She qualified to junior international elite as well as to the US Classic, a qualifier to the VISA Championships.
