Maranda Charme' Smith was born in Roseville, California on June 27, 1988. She is the daughter of Warren and Patty. She has an older sister, Brittany. She began gymnastics in 1992 at a pre-school program. Maranda trained at Pozsar's Gymnastics until 2003. She then switched to Byers Sacramento.

She qualified to the Level 9 Western Championships in 2000. In 2001, she competed as a level ten. She finished thirteenth all-around at the JO National Championships. In 2002, Maranda competed as a junior national elite. She won bars and finished second on vault at the American Challenge. At the US Challenge, Maranda placed eighth all-around. She returned to level ten in 2003. She finished third all-around at States. She won the Regional All-Around Title! At JO Nationals, she finished fourth all-around. In 2004, Maranda won the state all-around title. She then won the regional all-around, vault, beam and floor titles. She won vault at the JO National Championships. She finished second all-around at the State Championships in 2005. Maranda also placed second all-around at Regionals. She won floor at the JO National Championships.

Maranda began attending UCLA in the spring semester of 2006. She did not compete because of a shin injury. She left UCLA for personal reasons. She began attending the University of Florida in January of 2008. She began competing against Georgia with an uneven bars routine. She competed on bars eleven times and floor three times. She was named Florida's Newcomer of the Year.

In 2009, she was a three-time All-American in the all-around, vault and bars. She competed in vault finals. She won five event titles in 2009 with three on vault and two on floor. She competed in the all-around the last ten meets of the season. She won her first event title of her collegiate career on floor against Oklahoma. Maranda was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. In 2010, Maranda earned first-team All-American honors on uneven bars. She earned All-SEC second-team honors on floor. She won vault and floor at NCAA Regionals. She earned nine event titles including five on bars, two on vault and two on floor. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. In 2011, Maranda placed second on floor at the NCAA Championships, earning first-team All-American honors. She earned second-team All-SEC on floor. She won vault against Alabama. Maranda also won vault against Georgia and floor against Auburn. She was a member of the SEC Academic Honor ROll.
