Yuri Nagai was born on January 27, 1989. She trained at TNT Gymnastics in Tennessee. She trained at Premier North in 2006 and 2007. A native of Japan, Yuri is a former member of the Japan Junior National Team. She graduated from high school in 2007.

In 2003, Yuri competed at the Australian Olympic Youth Festivel. In 2004, she competed level ten. She finished tenth all-around at Regionals. Yuri placed second on bars at Regionals in 2006. She finished ninth all-around. In 2007, Yuri returned from injuries to finish seventh all-around at Regionals. She competed at JO Nationals.

As a freshman at Minnesota in 2008, Yuri competed on bars at thirteen meets. She finished second against New Hampshire. Yuri also competed on vault and floor once. In 2009, Yuri competed on vault, bars and floor in every meet. As a junior in 2010, Yuri competed on bars in twelve of the fourteen meets. She also competed on vault ten times. Yuri competed on vault and bars in every meet until she suffered an injury in 2011.
