Sarah Elizabeth Nagashima was born to Susan Hutchinson and Curt Nagashima on January 25, 1988. She has one older brother named Cameron. Both of her parents were gymnasts and coaches. She enjoys every event.

In 2000, Sarah competed for Northwest Aerials in Washington. She competed as a level eight at the Rainier Cup. She finished second all-around! In 2001, she moved up to level nine. She finished third all-around at the San Diego Classic. In 2003, Sarah competed for Gymnastics East. She competed as a level nine. At the Desert Devils Classic, she won the all-around title! At Regionals, she swept the gold medals. Sarah went on to finish second all-around at the Level 9 Western National Championships. In 2004, she moved up to level ten. Sarah won the California Classic. At the Washington State Championships, she finished first on vault. Sarah ended her season at the JO National Championships. She placed fourth on beam and in the top twenty overall.

Sarah continued to compete as a level ten in 2005 and 2006. She competed only a few events in the early 2005 season. At the Regional Championships, she finished sixth all-around! This qualified her for her second JO National Championships. In late 2005, Sarah placed second all-around at the Holiday Gymnastics Festival. She won the Blooms and Blossoms Invitational. Sarah then swept the gold medals at the State Championships. She won bars and beam at Regionals and finished second all-around! At the JO National Championships, Sarah placed sixteenth all-around!

During her freshman year at Arkansas she became a regular in the bars lineup. She competed on beam in one meet. She earned selection to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. As a sophomore, she had a early season ankle injury. She returned to the lineup on vault, beam and floor and later the all-around. She was selected as the Team's Most Improved Gymnast and earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. During her junior season, she competed in the all-around throughout the season. She placed third all-around against Ohio State, Kentucky and at the Regional Championships. She finished second against Georgia. Sarah won bars at the TWU Quad meet. At the NCAA Championships, she qualified for beam event finals. She finished third! She was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
