Keiko Laura Nakamura was born in Santa Monica, California on July 24, 1986. She is the daughter of Brian and Emiko Nakamura who both graduated from UCLA. She has two siblings, Akemi and Matthew. Akemi attends UCSD and Matthew attends Long Beach State. Her grandfather, Frank, played football for Michigan. She trained at Sea Wind Gymnastics/ECKE YMCA.

In 2003, she competed as a level nine. She qualified to Regionals. Keiko moved up to level ten in 2004. She finished ninth all-around at Regionals. She also competed in YMCA. She was a 2000 and 2001 YMCA National All-Star Team Member. In 2002, she won beam at YMCA Nationals.

Keiko began attending UC Berkeley in the fall of 2004. She competed on beam. She had a season-ending injury. As a sophomore, Keiko competed on beam. During the 2007 season, she continued to compete on beam. As a season she competed on beam eight times. She set her career high.
