Lina Nilsson was born on July 24, 1991. Her older sister, Hanna, was a level nine gymnast. Lina trained at Keystone Gymnastics in Pennsylvania before moving to California in 2002. She spent two seasons with USA Elite Gymnastics. Lina trained at Gymstars Modesto through the 2009 season. She spent her senior year with Champion Gymnastics Academy in Stockton. Lina graduated from high school in 2010.
In 2003, Lina competed level seven. She finished in the top fifteen at the State Championships. She moved up to level eight in 2004. She finished fourth on beam at the Flips USA Invitational. She finished tenth all-around at the State Championships. In 2005, Lina finished third on floor at the Flips USA Invitational. She placed third on beam at the Golden State Classic. At the State Championships, she finished eleventh all-around. Lina placed third on beam at Regionals. Lina began competing level nine in 2006. She finished third all-around at the Golden State Classic. She placed second on bars and beam at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals.
Lina continued competing level nine in 2007. She finished first on vault, bars and the all-around at the Surf City Classic. She placed second all-around at both the Golden State Classic and Gold Country Classic. She won the all-around titles at the Roseville Invitational and Byers Invitational. At the State Championships, she placed third all-around. Lina finished 15th all-around at Regionals. At Westerns, she placed seventh on bars and beam, sixth on floor and sixth all-around. Lina missed the 2008 season due to minor injuries.
In 2009, Lina competed level ten. She finished in the top ten all-around at the Winter Invitational. She competed at the WOGA Classic, Spirit of the Flame Challenge and Golden State Classic. Lina finished in the top ten at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals. In 2010, Lina won the all-around title at the Delta Classic. She finished fourth on floor at the Classic Rock Invitational. She won beam at the Byers Invitational. Lina placed second on bars at the State Championships. She finished tenth all-around at Regionals.
As a freshman at Cal, Lina competed on floor in the majority of the competitions. She competed on beam once.
