Madisyn O'Brien was born on July 11, 1991. She trained at Rohnert Park Gymnastics for the majority of her club career. She trained at Cal West in 2003. She graduated from high school in 2009.

In 2000, Madisyn competed level six. She placed in the top ten at the State Championships. She competed level nine in 2003. She finished seventh all-around at the State Championships. She finished in the top twenty at Regionals. In 2004, she placed second all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she finished second on floor. In 2005, she finished second all-around at both the Flips USA Invitational and Golden State Classic. She won bars and the all-around at the Wine Country Classic. At Regionals, she placed second all-around. At Westerns, she placed second on bars and eighth all-around.

Madisyn began competing level ten in 2006. She finished second on floor at the State Championships. She competed at Regionals. In 2007, she placed third all-around at the Wine Country Classic. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She finished tenth all-around at Regionals. In 2008, Madisyn placed second all-around at the Wine Country Classic. She finished fourth all-around at the State Championships. At Regionals, she placed fourth all-around. She competed at JO Nationals. In 2009, Madisyn finished first all-around at the Byers Invitational. She finished sixth all-around at both the State and Regional Championships. She finished 21st all-around at JO Nationals.

As a freshman at Cal in 2010, Madisyn competed in the all-around seven times. During her sophomore season in 2011, Madisyn earned All-Pac-10 second-team honors in the all-around. She qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships as an individual. She earned Student-Athlete of the Week for Cal in January.
