Ashley Brooke O'Neal was born on April 10, 1987. Ashley, who was raised in Kennesaw, Georgia, is the daughter of Gary and Helen. She trained at Gymnastics Academy of Atlanta with Jacob Giron and Natalia Valter.
She competed several years as a level ten. In 2002, Ashley placed second all-around at the Regional Championships. At the JO National Championships, she finished eighth all-around. In 2003, she won Regionals. At the JO National Championships, Ashley was third on floor. In 2004, she was the Georgia State Champion on bars and floor. At the Regional Championships, she finished third all-around and first on beam. Ashley did not compete at JO Nationals because of an injury. In 2005, she won Regionals again. At the JO National Championships, she finished seventh all-around.
During her freshman year, Ashley competed mainly on vault, beam and floor. She was an Academic All Sec member. She earned the Lewis Each Courage Award as a sophomore. She continued competing on vault, beam and floor. She earned career highs on all three events. As a junior in 2008, she was an Arthur Ashe Award Recipient. She was also an NACGC Scholastic All-American and Academic All-SEC team member. During her senior year, she only competed on floor. She was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
