Alyssa Onaga was born on September 2, 1986. She is the daughter of Ian and Jan Onaga. She graduated from Kalani High School in 2004. She trained at Hawaiian Island Twisters during her club career.
In 1998, she competed as a level six. She finished third all-around at the State Championships. She moved up to level seven in 1999. She won vault and bars and States. As a level eight in 2000, she finished first on bars at the Luka Nakoa Memorial. By 2002, she was competing as a level nine. She won the all-around title at States. At Regionals, she won bars and finished sixth all-around. This qualified her for the Western Championships. She finished in the top ten on bars. Alyssa repeated level nine in 2003. She competed at Westerns again. She moved up to level ten in her senior year. She qualified to the JO National Championships.
Alyssa began school at Sacramento State University in the fall of 2004. She performed two exhibitions on bars. As a sophomore, Alyssa competed on bars five meets and had three exhibitions. As a junior, she competed on bars and floor during the season. She continued to participate on these two events as a senior.
