Ashley Blair Postell was born to Linda and Gary in Cheverly, Maryland, on June 9, 1986. Her brother, Kyle, has a football scholarship to Duquesne University. She has a half-brother named Eric and a half-sister, Territa. She began gymnastics in 1992. She was on the US National Team from 1997 to 2005. Ashley trained at Capital Gymnastics during her club career. She did spend some time at Hill's Gymnastics in Maryland. Ashley began college at the University of Utah in the fall of 2004.

Her first year as an international elite was in 1998. She competed in the junior division. At the American Classic, Ashley finished third all-around. She won vault and beam. At the US Classic, she only competed on three events. At the US National Championships, she finished second all-around! Ashley won bars and beam. She was second on floor and third on vault. She was chosen to compete at the Canberra Cup in Australia. Ashley easily won the all-around title. She then competed at the International Team Championships. She also won the all-around title. In 1999, Ashley continued to compete as a junior international elite. She finished sixth all-around at the US National Championships. She competed at the International Team Championships again.

In 2000, Ashley placed sixth all-around at the US National Championships. She helped the USA defeat France in a competition. At the 2001 US Classic, Ashley finished third all-around and third on uneven bars. She struggled with consistency at Nationals. She still placed eighth all-around. Ashley went to Glasgow, Great Britain for the Glasgow Grand Prix. She finished first on beam and second on floor!

Ashley began competing in the senior division in 2002. She finished third on vault at the National Elite Podium Meet. She placed first on beam at the Zakharova Cup in Ukraine. At the US Classic, Ashley won a bronze on uneven bars. Her next meet was the US National Championships. She finished third all-around! Ashley then competed in a fun meet called the TJ Maxx International Challenge. She was selected for the United States World Team. At the World Championships, Ashley finished sixth on vault. She also won the world balance beam title!

Ashley had a great season in 2003. She finished third all-around at the Visa American Cup. She then competed at the Pacific Challenge. She won the bronze medal in the all-around. At the US Classic, Ashley won a bronze on floor. Her next meet was the US National Championships. She finished fourth all-around and first on beam! She was selected for the World Championship team. Unfortunately, she became sick and had to pull out. She went to Germany for the DTB Cup in the fall. In 2004, she finished third on beam at the US National Championships. She was invited to the Olympic Trials but declined. She then went to the University of Utah.

Her freshman season with Utah was fantastic. Ashley was a First-Team All-American in the all-around, bars, beam and vault. She earned second-team honors on floor. At the NCAA Championships, Ashley qualified to bars, beam and vault finals. She scratched from vault and beam because of a foot injury. She was named the NCAA North Central Region Gymnast of the Year. At the NCAA Championships, she finished third all-around. During her sophomore year she was a five-time first-team All-American. She finished in the top three on every apparatus during the first day. Ashley finished second all-around to Courtney Kupets.

Ashley continued to be successful as a junior. She was voted Utah's MVP for the third year in a row. She had thirty individual victories with seven in the all-around. She won the West Regional titles on all-around, bars and beam. At the NCAA Championships, she earned first-team All-American honors in the all-around, bars, beam and floor. She earned second-team honors on vault. She won the NCAA balance beam title. She placed second in the all-around.

During her senior season, she earned first-team All-American honors in the all-around, bars, beam and floor. She earned second-team honors on vault. She finished second on beam during event finals. She also placed second in the all-around. At the NCAA Regionals, she won the all-around, bars, beam and floor. She earned 47 individual titles which was a single-season record for Utah. She also set Utah's records with 120 career victories, 30 career all-around victories and eleven all-around wins in 2008 alone. She earned 20 all-american awards which is an NCAA record and the maximum one can achieve.
